January Week 2: Easy Review Activities

Hola teachers!

We've got your back with some fun activities to help you recap the Digital Lesson with your students. These review activities are optional, so feel free to pick and choose what works for you. But, if you're in a hurry, don't stress! Just show your students some of the digital lesson and you'll still be hailed as the Spanish master!

You will practice:

1.  Let It Snow

2.  Build a Snowman

1. Let It Snow! 10 Minutes

Supplies Needed: Cotton balls and a large bowl

Get your students feeling some winter weather magic by watching you throw cotton balls up in the air and letting them softly land in a bowl. (With a beaming smile and booming voice, shout out: ¡Está nevando, está nevando! It’s snowing, it’s snowing! (Pronounced: ¡Eh-stah neh-bahn-doh, eh-stah neh-bahn-doh!)

Ask your kiddos what they think the cotton balls represent. With any luck, they'll answer: "Snow!" Play the audio track below and encourage your students to sing the following words  and phrases with you:

  • la nieve: the snow (pronounced: lah nee-eh-beh)

  • los copos de nieve: snowflakes (pronounced: lohs koh-pohs deh nee-eh-beh)

  • está nevando: it's snowing (pronouced: eh-stah neh-bahn-doh)

00:00 / 01:01

After singing along with the audio track continue to repeat the phrase “está nevando" over and over while tossing the cotton balls up high and watching them flutter back down into the bowl. Chant the words to a catchy tune, play around with a high-pitched voice and low-pitched voice! Whatever you can do to make repeating the phrases a hoot for your students!

Next, ask the kids to raise their hand if they want to make it snow too! As each child takes a turn making it snow by throwing cotton balls up in the air and letting them fall, just like you did, get the entire class to chant “está nevando.” The kids will soon be able to chant "está nevando" without any prompts.

After each child takes a turn, give them a big high-five and compliment them one of the following expressions:

  • ¡Qué guay!: How cool! (Pronounced: ¡Keh gwahy!)

  • ¡Magnífico!: Magnificent! (Pronounced: ¡Mahg-nee-fee-koh!)

  • ¡Bien hecho!: Well done! (Pronounced: ¡Bee-en eh-choh!)

As each student takes a turn, trust me, they'll love it if you comment on their throwing styles. For example, you can say, "Wow, that's like a blizzard!" or "What a gentle snowfall!" or "Man, that was like one giant snowball! I'm glad that didn't land on my head!" They'll giggle at your comments, and that's the whole point! The more you make your students laugh, the more they'll enjoy Spanish class with you and think you're the coolest Spanish teacher ever!

2. Build a Snowman: 20 Mnutes

Supplies Needed: Snowman: Parts of the Body

Get ready for some frosty fun! Ask your class, "What can we create with snow?" and watch as they excitedly shout, "A snowman, of course!" As you show them the sad remains of a melted snowman, ask for their help in putting him back together. But first, let's learn the parts of a snowman in Spanish! Dial up the North Pole on your phone and let an eager Elf teach you and your students the lingo. And don't forget to put on your acting chops to make the phone call feel real! If you really ham it up, your students will be in stitches while still learning!

Now you are ready to guide your students to put the snowman together. You can stick to English, only saying the key parts of the body in Spanish, or you may decide to spice things up by going full Spanish with the help of the audio track below. Use these epic phrases to guide your students in putting the snowman together and show off those multilingual skills!

3. Snowman Coloring Sheet: 10 Minutes

This coloring sheet is a hoot! Not only can your students color in the cutest snowman, but they can also get creative with the kid characters too! Plus, it's the perfect opportunity to practice saying body parts in Spanish. Voila! You've got works of art to showcase in your classroom, or if you're feeling generous, send them home so proud parents can stick them on their fridge for all to see!
